By Tyler James Perry
The Hoosiers ended the year with not one or two leading scorers, but four. Surprisingly, Adam Logue, Chris Benz, KC Madock and Daniel Keeney all ended up with 34 points. They are also the only four to end with double digits in goals scored, with Logue leading by scoring 17 goals. This is not the first time Logue has been near the top of the scoring list, as he was second in points his freshman and sophomore years. “My role is not to be a vocal leader, and not to make the big hits,” Logue said. “My job is strictly to put points on the board.” Despite being one of the leading scorers this season, he said he could have put up even bigger numbers. “I wish I could have got more points this year being a junior, but it feels good to be on the top of that list,” Logue said. He finished out the year with 17 goals and 17 assists. Sophomore Chris Benz tied Logue’s 34-point total, but was second to him in goals with 14. He said he’s happy with his individual results, but considers himself a team guy. “It always feels good to be up there, but in the end I’m not a selfish guy,” Benz said. “I’m more concerned with where the team ends up.” He also said he was working to be the leading scorer next year. “I’ll see what happens in the next two years, and see if I can stay on top or not,” Benz said. His grand total for the season was 14 goals and 20 assists. Fellow sophomore KC Madock was just behind Logue and Benz with 11 goals. His 23 assists have him second only to senior Daniel Keeney in assists (who had 10 goals and 24 assists), and were enough to put him into the four-player knot for first. He said he was also happy with his results, but like Benz, he was more concerned with how the team played. “It’s always nice to end the season like that, where you know you have some tangible evidence that you had a good year, but I would rather have us go farther as a team and not get knocked out so early,” Madock said. While some players say they don’t keep track of their stats, others use them as a guide to help them find out where they stand. “You always know about it in the back of your head, but it’s not something you want to talk about or brag about,” Logue said. “I use stats as goals at the start of the year.” He said the stat he was most proud of was his 89% faceoff winning percentage. Benz also said he uses stats to gauge his progress. “Stats are important, but mostly just to look at,” he said. “It’s a good way to see what you’re striving for.” Benz had 28 points his freshman season, and he said his 34 points this season will allow him to measure his rate of progress. “My goal every year is to be moving up from the past year,” he said. “Maybe next year, I can move up six more, or maybe more than that.” While Logue and Benz follow their stats closely, Madock doesn’t put as much stock into them. “To be honest, the longer I’ve been playing hockey, they’ve gotten less important to me,” Madock said. “After 10 years, they’ve gotten lower and lower on the list of what’s important to me.”
